Sydney and Bankstown airspace environment enables intensive practices of essential radio-communication procedures in the early stage of the flying training. Air familiarization in both the controlled and non-controlled airspace environment is also of prime importance to demonstrate competency in flying in the appropriate class of airspace.
Also this diversity of airspaces reflected by its traffic and procedures will help developing your situational awareness to maintain safety at all times, enhance your sense of responsibility as a pilot in command and define superior flying skills.
The western area of Bankstown Airport offers a helicopter training area that we use for basic training i.e. hovering.
From time to time, operations may be undertaken at one of the secondary bases like Camden aerodrome for solo circuits, low level and autorotation exercises.
Sydney non-controlled airspace (OCTA) includes fantastic areas such as the Northern Beaches, the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley… which you will overfly during navigation exercises.
There are several different navigation routes from Bankstown airport offering diversity in landmarks and topography i.e. populated areas, bushland, mountainous relief, coastal lanes over water; and in airspaces i.e. Restricted, Danger and Prohibited areas; Controlled airspace CTA/CTR and NDB/VOR facilities to make use of radio aids.
We also have specific lane of entry procedures and helicopter access corridors such as the famous Parramatta river to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Introduction to radar CTA/CTR procedures are possible with Sydney airport/Mascot.
To us, Bankstown airport is an ideal location close to diverse training environment from where we are able to readily and timely operate all of the air exercises, reach the instructional objectives and meet the completion standards.

Helicopter choice depends upon: number of passengers, comfort level, airspeed, and cost. Small piston helicopter are generally used for short and medium haul of fewer passengers at a lower rate. The higher hourly rate, but faster turbine helicopter, is more suitable for medium to long haul. The faster turbine is sometimes more economical than the slower piston which, even at a lower hourly rate, will require more flight hours and refuelling stops to cover the same distance. The best solution for the shortest haul is always the helicopter, which is able to directly connect major airport hubs or isolated private residences in the country-side.
30 Min Sydney Scenic Helicopter Flight:
Departing from our helipad at Bankstown Airport, we fly North past Sydney Olympic Park. Your friendly pilot will provide a running commentary of the flight while you take in the spectacular sights of Parramatta River followed by an amazing panoramic view of Sydney CBD as you enter the harbour.
From the comfort of one of HTT's modern helicopters you can take photos of the Bridge and Opera House as we circle the harbour. At 1000 feet (about 300m) we're at the perfect height for some once in a lifetime photo opportunities.
We then head back up the Paramatta River and over Olympic Park as we return to Bankstown Airport. You're welcome to come and enjoy tea and coffee back at our hangar and have your photo taken with our helicopters on the ground as well. Total flight time is approximately 30 minutes but the memories last forever.
One person can enjoy a scenic flight in the Guimbal Cabri G2. Couples or families can be accommodated in either an R44 or a Bell 206 Jetranger.

A Trial Instructional Flight is the first flight for a helicopter student. We recommend no longer than 30 minutes of actual flying time for the pilot's first time. The 30 minutes of flight is fully loggable towards your helicopter licence.
You will be taught about the effects of the controls and will actually fly the helicopter. We recommend arriving one hour before the flight time to be briefed on a pre-flight inspection of your aircraft as well as a pre-flight briefing with your instructor. Also allow 30 minutes for a post-flight briefing.
