5th Generation Capability for Australia

Lockheed Martin is working with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as the F-35 program industry leader and Original Equipment Manufacturer in Australia, providing unparalleled experience, expertise and success in leading the design, production and sustainment of the F-35 weapon system. Through our longstanding partnership with the RAAF, Lockheed Martin is delivering the F-35 production and sustainment capability in Australia while creating thousands of jobs for Australian industry.

The Australian Government announced its selection of the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A Lightning II to replace its classic Hornet fighter fleet in 2009, building on a more than 50-year partnership between the RAAF and Lockheed Martin.

Every F-35 built contains parts and components manufactured in Australia – local companies are realising the industrial benefits of the program.

By operating the same aircraft as allies in the Asia-Pacific and around the world, the RAAF will take advantage of the F-35’s powerful sensors to share data to an unprecedented level of interoperability. The global fleet of F-35s will also give Australia advantages in economies of scale on the production and sustainment of more than 3,000 F-35s for decades to come.

Industrial Partnerships

As a programme partner, Australian businesses have the opportunity to supply components for production and sustainment of the entire F-35 fleet, not just Australian aircraft. Every F-35 built will contain some Australian parts and components.

The centre wing assembly contains machined longerons produced by Lovitt Technologies Australia. Sydney-based manufacturer Quickstep also supplies components to the F-35 Lightning II program. Lovitt and Quickstep are just two of the more than 17 Australian-based companies manufacturing parts and components for the worldwide fleet of F-35s, including Australia’s own F-35 aircraft.

In total, More than 50 Australian companies are contributing to the development, production and sustainment of the F-35, and to date, these companies have been awarded more than $1.3 billion AUD in contracts, providing high-tech manufacturing jobs for Australian industry.

The high-tech industry jobs contribute to economic growth in cities around Australia, setting up the industrial base with the technology transfer required to remain competitive in the global aerospace marketplace well into the future. Learn more about the people working on the F-35 for Australia.
